Angel Alvarez

“My goal is for each painting to feel alive, with characters suspended in the middle of their story—expressions full of humor, heart, and emotion. Through color and painterly brushwork, I strive to rekindle the sense of wonder we first felt as children discovering Disney”.
Born and raised in South Florida, Angel M. Alvarez began drawing as soon as he could hold a crayon. His mother nurtured his passion by giving him a copy of The Illusion of Life by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, fueling his dream of one day becoming a Disney animator.
Guided by his love of storytelling and expressive characters, Alvarez pursued illustration and earned his Master of Fine Arts in Illustration from the University of Hartford in 2017. He later continued his studies at the Miami International Fine Arts Atelier, where he mastered classical oil painting techniques and refined the painterly, broken-color approach that now defines his work. His vision has always been to unite timeless classical methods with the whimsy and expressiveness of the characters he loves.
Alvarez’s artistic influences span fine artists, illustrators, and animators. He is drawn to Scott Gustafson, Norman Rockwell, and Joaquín Sorolla, whose storytelling, brushwork, expressive characters, and mastery of light deeply inform his style. He is equally inspired by legendary animators such as Glen Keane, Ollie Johnston, and Frank Thomas—artists who brought characters to life with movement, expression, and heart.
His career has taken him through illustration, animation, and teaching. He has worked as a children’s illustrator, an animator in children’s media, and as an instructor in digital art, drawing, and animation.
Now part of the Disney Fine Art family, Alvarez fulfills a lifelong dream of painting the characters and stories that first sparked his imagination. His debut collection celebrates Disney’s timeless magic through expressive brushwork and heartfelt storytelling—honoring the legacy while remaining unmistakably his own.
